about

Music and sound design from the theatre show The River by playwright Jez Butterworth, staged by Red Stitch theatre company.

"Mysterious, dreamlike and so intimate it feels like voyeurism. 4.5 stars" - ArtsHub

Making extensive use of river sounds, hydrophone recordings and intimate felt covered piano miniatures de Groot’s score is delicate yet surprisingly intense. This almost continuous auditory journey takes the listener underwater and into the world of Jez Butterworth’s ghostly River.

The River Synopsis
On a moonless night, a nameless man whisks his new lover away to the remote family cabin he’s been coming to since a boy. He wants to go trout fishing in the darkness of the new moon and he wants her to join him. But perhaps she is not the first woman he has brought here. As the mystery deepens, intimacy and intrigue abound and the sea trout are ready to run.
